An inclusive support network has been launched for South Canterbury’s LGBTQIA+ youth.

The network will allow young members of the region’s rainbow community to meet in a safe environment and is a collaboration between Ara student counsellor Leigh Lawless and YMCA South and Mid-Canterbury Positive Youth Development team leader Natasha Dominey.

The Rainbow Youth Group came about after the pair had been discussing the importance of having a safe space in the Timaru area, for Ara students and other youth.

“Leigh and I started discussing the possibility of a South Canterbury support system for the Rainbow community after she told me that there were individuals on site who were struggling,” Dominey said.
